Linear Access Control Installation: The Riverside Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Linear access control systems and replacement parts across Riverside, with most complete installations running between $850 and $2,400 depending on the model, wiring run, and number of entry points. We typically have the common Linear controllers, keypads, and receivers on the truck, which means most calls get a same-week install when a part is already identified. Most owners discover the failure when a gate stops responding to a remote, a keypad goes dark, or the system forgets every code overnight.

Riverside’s summer heat does a number on access control boards: capacitors swell, solder joints crack, and the plastic housings on outdoor keypads get brittle after a few seasons of direct sun. We see it most often in neighborhoods like Canyon Crest and Wood Streets, where older adobe and ranch homes have original Linear systems that haven’t been touched in 15 years. Cody Beckman and our crew have pulled apart enough Linear panels to know exactly which revision you have within about two minutes of looking at the board.

Which Linear Models This Applies To

Linear’s access control line splits into a few recognizable families. The most common we service in Riverside are the AE-100, AE-500, and AE-2000 telephone entry systems, the AK-11 and AK-21 digital keypads, and the MGT and ACT series gate operators when they’ve been paired with a Linear receiver. If you have a Linear entry panel box on a pedestal near your driveway, it’s almost certainly an AE series unit. The model number is printed on a label inside the cabinet, usually on the right side or on the main circuit board itself.

OEM Linear boards are worth the money when it’s the main controller that failed. We’ve tried enough aftermarket equivalent boards over the years to know they don’t always handle Riverside’s temperature swings the same way. A $90 aftermarket board that dies in 14 months costs more than the $180 OEM board that runs for 8 years. Where aftermarket parts make sense is on peripheral items: keypad housings, wiring harnesses, antenna mounts. Those don’t carry the same risk.

A compatibility note we’ve learned on the job: the AE-100 and AE-2000 boards look nearly identical but are not interchangeable. The AE-2000 runs a different firmware and uses a different memory chip. Swap one into the other’s enclosure and you’ll get a dead panel and a scratched head. We check the board revision before we do anything else.

Signs Your Linear Access Control Installation Is Failing

  • Remotes stop working one by one. When Linear receivers start to fail, they typically lose range first, then stop recognizing remote codes entirely. If you’re standing five feet from the gate with fresh batteries and still nothing, the receiver board is the likely culprit.
  • The keypad lights up but won’t accept a code. This usually means the keypad’s memory has failed or the main control board isn’t storing entries. In Riverside we see this after power surges from summer thunderstorm season in the foothills.
  • Codes reset to factory defaults on their own. A failing backup battery on the main board will erase programming every time the power blinks. The $15 battery takes 10 minutes to replace, but the programming takes an hour to rebuild if you don’t have the master code.
  • You hear a relay click but the gate doesn’t move. That points to the relay output on the Linear board wearing out, or a bad connection between the board and the gate operator. We trace it with a meter before replacing anything.
  • The intercom buzzes or drops calls. On AE-series phone entry panels, a failing phone module or ground issue causes exactly this. It’s not the phone company’s fault, and it usually needs a board-level fix.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A straightforward Linear keypad swap in Riverside runs $180 to $320 installed. A full AE-series telephone entry panel replacement runs $850 to $1,400. A complete new access control install with a pedestal, panel, keypad, and wiring run to the gate operator typically falls between $1,600 and $2,400, depending on how far the wire has to travel and whether we’re trenching under concrete or pulling through existing conduit.

Every quote includes the part at our cost plus labor, all written down before we touch anything. That written price is what you pay, even if the job runs longer than expected. All Linear access control installation work we do carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the install isn’t right, we make it right. No service call fee, no back-and-forth.

We keep the common parts on the truck when we come out: AE-series main boards, AK-11 and AK-21 keypads, backup batteries, relay modules, and replacement decal covers for outdoor keypads. If we have to order something specific to your revision, we tell you the lead time before we leave, and the written price includes it.

DIY or Call Us?

There are a few things worth checking yourself before you call. Make sure the keypad has power, that the panel breaker isn’t tripped, and that the wires on the back of the keypad are seated tight. Low-voltage wiring is not going to hurt you. What you should not do is open the main panel and start bridging terminals. An AE-series panel runs on 16 to 24 volts AC, but it feeds direct to your gate operator, and a crossed wire can fry an $800 operator board in half a second.

We’ve had calls from Riverside homeowners who crossed a relay wire as a DIY fix and turned a $200 keypad replacement into a full operator replacement. The honest math is that access control installation is not the place to save labor dollars. Call (341) 895-4331 and we’ll give you a written price. If it’s simple, the price will reflect that.
